Decatur School Playground
Seattle, Washington
ROLE: landscape architecture
SCOPE OF WORK: playground design
STATUS: completed
CONSTRUCTION COSTS: $50,000
CLIENT: AE2/ Decatur School Council
Parents and teachers at AE2/ Decatur Elementary School wanted to create a well-defined, safe-feeling corner of their huge grass and asphalt play area for the younger kids. With a Department of Neighborhoods Community Project Grant the firm conducted a participatory process that included the kids, parents, teachers and neighbors. The first phase of construction included new play equipment and a ‘serpent mound.’ The serpent mound is fun to play on and provides the desired feeling of separation from the play-fields beyond without obstructing views. Maggi Johnson was a project manager at Jones and Jones when completing this work. |
