Johnson+Southerland worked with The Bertschi School to provide a new drama/theater space, relocate and renovate their library, and improve a number of classrooms in their existing facilities located on the north end of the Capital Hill neighborhood of Seattle.
The design team moved and reinforced existing structural elements, added new finishes and theatrical sound and lighting, and installed new mechanical and electrical systems to provide a new drama room for class performances. The library was relocated from one building to another on campus to provide a dedicated classroom space and a welcoming daylit teaching environment. All work was completed over one summer vacation without disrupting the school's schedule.
Johnson+Southerland also developed concept plans for a Science Classroom for the school. The space would provide approximately 1,100 square feet of classroom, storage and a restroom. The study included a renovation of their existing science classroom into a Robotics classroom. The study also included a lift to provide access to the upper floors of the adjacent building.
