Passage Point is a transitional housing facility where women leaving prison are reunited with their children and can practice parenting and self-sufficiency skills in a supportive environment. Seventy-five women and up to one-hundred and fifty children will occupy this rural site, formerly a drug rehabilitation center. In 2005, Johnson|Southerland completed a vision plan for Passage Point, introducing the idea to the community. The firm completed a master plan in 2006 and continued the project design with a multi-disciplinary team in 2008. Focusing on outdoor program elements, Johnson|Southerland proposed play areas designed for children from toddlers to teenagers, developed community gathering areas as well as private reflective places, addressed security and transportation issues, and proposed terraced courtyards as a humane solution to below-grade unit entries. |
